One of the privileges (and it is a privilege!) of homeschooling is the ability to take off a day or two and go to certain destinations. Historical markers, literary landmarks, even art museums . . . I love them all.

One of my favorite such places in the South is Connemara, the last home of Carl Sandburg in Asheville, North Carolina. Mr. Sandburg’s widow sold the property–including his belongings–to the National Park Service not long after Sandburg died. (Here’s a link about the property.)

I will forever be moved by the huge number of books that adorn the many bookshelves in the home.

This PBS video is a lovely look at the property and the life of Sandburg, one of the greatest American poets of the 20th century.

Carl Sandburg earned three Pulitzer Prizes, two for his poetry, one for a book he wrote about Abraham Lincoln.

If you aren’t familiar with his work, read “I Am the People, the Mob” and tell me it isn’t relevant today. (Here is a link.) You can read read more from Sandburg on the Poetry Foundation’s site. (Here is a link.)

Never stop reading,

Erin
